Ethereum supports developer

Ethereum Foundation funds Tornado Cash developer's legal fight.
Foundation's financial commitment
The Ethereum Foundation is stepping up to support Roman Storm, a developer recently convicted of running an unlicensed money transmission business. On August 7, the organization announced a financial contribution of up to $1 million for his legal defense, initially pledging to match donations up to $500,000.
Hsiao-Wei Wang, co-executive director of the foundation, stated that this move signifies ongoing support for the Tornado Cash project and its team, encouraging the broader cryptocurrency community to help with fundraising efforts.
Tornado Cash overview
Tornado Cash is a decentralized protocol on the Ethereum blockchain that facilitates private transactions through smart contracts. Since its debut in 2019, it has worked to improve privacy by obscuring the on-chain links between transaction senders and receivers.
Despite its aims, Tornado Cash has attracted scrutiny from U.S. authorities over allegations of enabling illegal activities like money laundering, sparking debates about privacy in the cryptocurrency sector.
Legal developments
In a recent jury trial, Storm was found guilty of operating an unauthorized money transmission service, though he was cleared of more serious money laundering charges. His co-developer, Alexey Pertsev, faces comparable legal issues, highlighting the challenges confronting Tornado Cash and legal complexities for developers in the cryptocurrency realm.
As Storm considers an appeal, the Department of Justice might pursue retrials for unresolved charges. These legal proceedings could significantly impact developers working on privacy-focused cryptocurrency solutions.
Community support
The cryptocurrency community has shown considerable support following these events, with notable figures advocating for the Tornado Cash team. Many stress the necessity of safeguarding open-source development, asserting that merely coding should not be viewed as a criminal act.
